01 · DEFINITIONWhat Residential Deregistration means

Residential deregistration is the formal act of removing your registered address from the population register of the country you leave. Many civil law countries keep such a register: the Netherlands expects it if you stay abroad for at least 8 months in a year, Sweden and Japan from 1 year. The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have no population register, so there is nothing to deregister.

Where a register exists, deregistering is the first visible step of an exit. Depending on the country, it ends local duties tied to a registered address, such as municipal charges or insurance obligations.

What it does not do: end your tax liability. Tax residency follows your home, your habitual abode and your centre of vital interests, not the register. In countries without a register, these tests decide on their own: the United Kingdom applies its Statutory Residence Test, Canada looks at your residential ties and can charge departure tax, Australia can keep you resident through its domicile test, and US citizens remain taxable wherever they live.

That is the trap we see most often. People deregister, move, and 2 years later the tax office treats them as if they had never left.

Done right, deregistration is part of a sequence: exit tax checked, accounts and a Compliance Residency in place, the flat given up, then deregistration, then the new residency. The order matters more than the act itself.

Which steps your exit needs and in which order is what we map with you before you hand in the form.
