01 · DEFINITIONWhat Schengen Area means

The Schengen Area is a European cooperation zone in which participating states generally do not maintain routine border controls at their internal borders. At the same time, they apply common rules for visas, external borders, and short-term stay calculations. For international travelers, entrepreneurs, and residency planning, the Schengen Area matters because mobility, visa-free access, and permitted days of stay are often assessed across the area as a whole rather than country by country. It is not identical to the European Union, even though the two overlap substantially.
