Supranational Settlement Blocs (SSBs)

Citizenship

Formal treaty arrangements between countries where citizenship in one member state grants the right to reside, work, or settle across all other member states.

Supranational Settlement Blocs (SSBs) are treaty arrangements between countries in which citizenship of one member state gives you the right to live and work in the other member states, either automatically or with minimal formalities. One passport can therefore open an entire region, without a separate residence permit for each country.

The best-known example is the European Union together with the European Economic Area: citizens of any member state can settle in any other, and Switzerland is linked through a bilateral agreement. Other long-established arrangements include the Common Travel Area between the United Kingdom and Ireland and the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement between Australia and New Zealand.

In South America, the MERCOSUR Residence Agreement gives citizens of participating states a temporary residence permit on application, which can later become permanent residence. In the Gulf, citizens of the GCC states can live and work across the member states. In the Caribbean, the CARICOM Single Market allows defined groups of nationals, such as graduates and skilled professionals, to work in other member states.

The depth varies a lot. Some blocs grant settlement rights without conditions, others only for certain professions, only after an application, or on paper but not yet in practice. What counts is not the name of the treaty but the rights that actually apply to your nationality today.

In flag theory this turns citizenship into a multiplier: the right second passport can give you access to a whole region of residence and business options. That is why we look at the bloc behind a passport, not only at its visa-free count.

Which bloc fits your plans and which passport gets you there is something we map with you in the free initial consultation.

Find out which combination of residency, citizenship & structure actually fits your life

Most people live where they were born. Not where it makes strategic sense. They choose a country. Sovereign individuals build a setup.

A strong international setup considers:

  • tax systems
  • mobility
  • optionality
  • long-term security
  • a Plan B citizenship

Not just a visa.

In the strategy call, we evaluate which residency programs make strategic sense - and which ones could limit you long-term, create unnecessary obligations, or lead to avoidable tax exposure.

Build an international setup that gives you options - not dependencies.
