01 · DEFINITIONWhat Tax Exit / Deregistration means
Tax exit or deregistration is the set of legal and administrative steps that end your tax residence in a country and move you out of its primary tax net.
Depending on the country this includes formal deregistration filings, notifying the authorities of your departure, closing domestic addresses and proving that your key personal and economic ties are genuinely cut. Minimum physical presence thresholds often decide whether residence has really ended.
Deregistration alone does not end every form of tax exposure. Some countries apply extended residency rules for years after departure, keep reporting duties alive or trigger an Exit Tax on unrealised gains on the day you leave.
The Tax Residency / Tax Domicile rules of the country you leave and the country you move to have to be assessed together, with treaty provisions in mind.
Within the GoodbyeMatrix approach, tax exit is a sequencing exercise. Your departure date, your new residence and any Compliance Residency arrangement are aligned so that the transition is defensible rather than a symbolic change of address.
Rules differ by country and change over time. Which steps your exit needs, and in which order, is what we map with you before you hand in the deregistration form.
