01 · DEFINITIONWhat Tax Residency / Tax Domicile means
Tax residency, sometimes called tax domicile, is the country that treats you as fiscally resident under its own rules. It usually determines which state can raise the broadest claim on your worldwide income, known as Unlimited Tax Liability.
Countries use different tests. Common triggers are physical presence, habitual abode, centre of vital interests or a home that is available to you. Many jurisdictions apply a day count linked to the 183-Day Rule, but the threshold and the counting method differ from country to country.
In common law systems, domicile is a separate and more permanent concept than ordinary tax residency. It was the basis of special regimes such as non-dom taxation. Several of those regimes are being reformed or abolished, so a domicile-based benefit you read about last year may already be gone.
For GoodbyeMatrix clients, tax residency is the foundation of the whole structure. It decides where business profits, dividends and capital gains are taxed, and it drives the questions of exit, reporting and bank onboarding.
It interacts directly with Compliance Residency: any credible international setup rests on a defensible, documented residency position, never on an address alone.
Where your tax residency really sits after a move is the first thing we clarify in the free initial consultation.
