01 · OVERVIEWWhat makes this program stand out
For rentiers and pensioners, the M visa is the Colombia visa based on recurring foreign income rather than local work. Colombia offers renewable temporary M visas to individuals who can demonstrate recurring foreign income from specific sources. The program operates through three distinct qualification pathways. The Rentista route requires recurring foreign income from pensions, interest, dividends, or rental income equivalent to at least 10 times the Colombian monthly minimum wage (COP 17,509,050). The Pensionado route requires income from a formal pension scheme equivalent to at least 3 times the Colombian monthly minimum wage (COP 5,252,715). The Independent Professional route requires professional income earned abroad equivalent to at least 10 times the Colombian monthly minimum wage (COP 17,509,050).
The M visa is granted with 3-year validity and can be renewed. Holders must maintain physical presence in Colombia for at least 1 day per 6 months to keep the visa active. After 5 consecutive years of residency under the M visa, applicants become eligible to apply for permanent residency. To qualify for permanent residency, applicants must not have been absent from Colombia for more than 180 days in any of the preceding 5 years.
The timeline to permanent residency varies by nationality. The standard requirement is 5 years of consecutive residency for most nationalities. Nationals of Latin American or Caribbean countries qualify after 1 year. Spaniards qualify after 2 years. Applicants who are married to a Colombian citizen or are the parent of a Colombian child qualify after 2 years.
After obtaining permanent residency, applicants become eligible for Colombian citizenship through naturalization after holding permanent residency status for 5 additional years. During these 5 years, applicants must be physically present in Colombia for at least 183 days per year in each year. Citizenship applicants must demonstrate Spanish proficiency and pass a civics exam. Colombia permits dual and multiple citizenship. A Colombian passport provides visa-free access to 133 countries.

02 · INVESTMENT & COSTSInvestment and costs
What level of income you need to show
Colombia's Independent Means visas require demonstration of recurring monthly income from specific qualifying sources. The exact threshold depends on which category you pursue, Rentista, Pensionado, or Independent Professional.
Rentista (Rentier) applicants must show COP 17,509,050 monthly from recurring revenue sources. Qualifying income includes rental income from property, investment dividends, or other regularized and predictable passive revenue streams. This income must be demonstrably stable and recurring, not one-time or sporadic earnings.
Pensionado (Pensioner) applicants face a significantly lower threshold: COP 5,252,715 monthly. However, this income must originate from a formal pension scheme, either public or private, that is officially recognized by Colombian authorities. Personal savings or irregular income do not qualify; only documented pension distributions satisfy this category.
Independent Professional applicants must demonstrate COP 17,509,050 monthly from professional services income. In addition to income documentation, this category requires at least three certificates of professional experience in your corresponding field of work. These certificates must substantiate your expertise and active professional standing.
All three categories require proof of income through documentation that demonstrates both the amount and the recurring nature of funds. Bank statements, pension payment letters, rental agreements with payment history, or investment account statements typically serve as evidence. The documentation must cover a sufficient period to establish that income is stable and genuinely recurring, not temporary or irregular earnings.
If you include dependent family members (spouse or children), you must demonstrate slightly higher income thresholds to cover their living costs. The exact additional amount depends on the number and status of dependents; consult with Colombian immigration authorities for precise figures applicable to your family structure.
Which fees you should expect
The application fee is US$285, payable upon submission.
International health insurance is mandatory. Coverage must be at least US$60,000. This insurance requirement applies to the primary applicant and any included dependents.
No other fees, processing costs, or administrative charges are specified for this visa category.

04 · REQUIREMENTSWhat you need to qualify
Applicants must qualify under one of three income-based routes. Each route requires proof of recurring monthly income and mandatory international health insurance. All applicants pay a US$285 application fee and must hold health insurance with minimum coverage of US$60,000.
Rentista route: Demonstrate monthly income of 10 times the Colombian minimum wage (COP 17,509,050). Income must come from recurring revenue sources: rental income, dividends, interest, or other regularized passive income streams. The income must be predictable and documented.
Pensionado route: Demonstrate monthly income of 3 times the Colombian minimum wage (COP 5,252,715). Income must originate from a formal pension scheme, public or private, recognized by Colombia. This is the lowest income threshold available.
Independent Professional route: Demonstrate monthly income of 10 times the Colombian minimum wage (COP 17,509,050). Applicants must additionally provide at least three certificates of professional experience in the corresponding field of work. The income must be earned independently, typically from foreign professional services.
Applicants may include a spouse and child dependents in the application. Including dependents requires demonstration of slightly higher income levels than the base thresholds, though the exact increment is not formally codified.
Visa holders must maintain physical presence of at least 1 day per 6 months to keep the M visa active. This is the minimum presence requirement during the initial 3-year validity period. More restrictive presence rules apply later when transitioning to permanent residency and citizenship.
05 · BENEFITSWhy this program may be worth considering
Colombia permits dual and multiple citizenship without restriction. You retain all existing citizenships when naturalizing as Colombian. The Colombian passport grants visa-free access to 133 countries.
No capital investment or government donation is required. You qualify purely through recurring foreign income. The processing timeline is short compared to investment-based programs in other jurisdictions.
Colombia offers a lower cost of living than most OECD countries. Expenses for housing, services, and daily consumption remain substantially below Western European and North American levels. The climate is consistently warm year-round in most major urban centers.
Colombian residency provides enhanced business access to Latin American markets. Colombia maintains trade agreements and economic integration frameworks with neighboring economies. The country serves as a strategic base for commercial operations across the region.
06 · PATH TO CITIZENSHIPHow the path to citizenship works
After obtaining permanent residency, you become eligible for Colombian citizenship through naturalization. You must hold permanent residency status for 5 additional years before you can apply. During these 5 years, you must maintain physical presence of at least 183 days per year in each of the 5 years. This is stricter than the M visa or permanent residency presence requirements.
Colombian naturalization requires two formal examinations. You must pass a test on Colombia's history, geography, and constitution. You must also pass a Spanish-language proficiency test. Native Spanish speakers are exempt from the language test. Both tests are waived if you hold a bachelor's degree or higher from a Colombian university. Both tests are also waived if you are over 65 years old.
The full timeline from initial M visa to citizenship eligibility is approximately 10 years. This breaks down as follows: up to 3 years on the initial M visa, 5 years of residency to qualify for permanent residency, then 5 years holding permanent residency status before naturalization eligibility. In practice, many applicants accelerate the permanent residency step if they qualify for the shorter timelines available to Latin American nationals, Spaniards, or family members of Colombians.
Colombia permits dual and multiple citizenship without restriction. You retain all existing citizenships when you naturalize. You are not required to renounce any prior nationality. This is codified policy and applies to all naturalization applicants regardless of their country of origin.

The Cancillería (Colombian Foreign Ministry) processes all applications for the M visa under this program.
