01 · DEFINITIONWhat Limited Tax Liability means
Limited tax liability means a country taxes only income that has a source inside its borders. Rent from a property there, a business branch, employment performed there, certain dividends and interest.
It is the counterpart of Unlimited Tax Liability, which covers your worldwide income. When you leave a country properly, unlimited liability ends. Limited liability stays for every source that remains.
That surprises many emigrants. The exit is clean, and still the old country wants a tax return every year for the rented flat, the shareholding or the German pension.
A Double Taxation Agreement decides who taxes what and can reduce or remove the double burden. It does not switch off limited tax liability.
Germany adds a special rule for emigrants to low-tax countries: the extended limited tax liability under the Foreign Tax Act, which can reach further than normal for up to 10 years.
Within a Sovereign Blueprint we map every remaining source in your old country before you leave. Sell it, restructure it or keep it, but never be surprised by it.
