01 · DEFINITIONWhat Residence-Based Taxation means
Residence-based taxation is the model under which a country taxes its residents on their worldwide income, not only on income earned at home. It is the most common system in the world and the opposite of territorial taxation, which focuses on domestic-source income.
Whether it applies to you depends on how a country defines tax residency. Physical presence, habitual abode or centre of vital interests are the usual connecting factors.
Once you qualify as resident, the state can claim taxing rights over your entire global income, subject to its domestic law and any applicable tax treaty.
For internationally mobile entrepreneurs and investors this matters before you choose where to live. Moving between countries with different systems can change your total tax exposure dramatically, sometimes in ways that only show up after the first tax return.
Within GoodbyeMatrix, tax residency analysis is the foundation of every Sovereign Blueprint, because it shapes citizenship, business structuring and asset location.
Do not confuse residence-based taxation with citizenship-based taxation, which ties liability to nationality (the United States are the main case), or with territorial systems that limit tax to domestic income. Definitions differ sharply between countries, so every relocation decision we plan with you rests on a country-specific review, not on general assumptions.
