01 · DEFINITIONWhat Territorial Taxation means
Territorial taxation is a system under which a country taxes mainly the income that arises within its own borders. Residents are not taxed on their worldwide income. Foreign-source income can stay outside the local tax net, in whole or in part.
The exact scope depends on 3 things: how the country defines source, which anti-avoidance rules it applies and how it treats specific categories such as pensions, capital gains or foreign employment income.
The contrast is Residence-Based Taxation, where a country claims your global income once you become resident. Territorial systems appeal to internationally mobile entrepreneurs because foreign business and investment income can remain untaxed locally, provided the activity genuinely happens abroad. Panama and Paraguay are the examples we work with most.
One trap: a laptop in your residence country can turn foreign income into local income. Source is about where the work is done, not where the client sits.
Within the GoodbyeMatrix approach, territorial taxation is one building block among several, not a universal solution. It has to be combined with Non-Dom Status rules where relevant, with permanent establishment risk and with the requirements of your former tax residency.
Countries marketed as tax free often still tax specific income. Which categories stay outside the net in your target country is what we check with you against current law.
