What makes this program stand out

The Cayman Islands Investor Visa is a residence by investment program that grants legal residency in a Caribbean archipelago located just over one hour's flight south of Miami. The program provides access to world-class healthcare and education within a stable Common Law legal system. Applicants qualify through capital deployment across four distinct investment routes, with minimum thresholds ranging from CI$500,000 to CI$2 million depending on the route selected.

The program operates through multiple residency pathways with different requirements and benefits. The Certificate of Permanent Residence route leads to permanent residency status after 5 years and requires only 1 day of physical presence annually. Alternative routes issue 25-year residency permits but demand higher presence thresholds: 30 days per year for Residence Certificate routes and 90 days per year for the Certificate of Direct Investment route.

Residency holders who acquire British Overseas Territory Citizenship (BOTC) and meet additional criteria may eventually apply for the Right to Be Caymanian after at least 15 years of total residence. This pathway is available only to applicants with no existing family ties to the islands. The program permits dual and multiple citizenship, and eventual citizenship provides visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 185 countries.

What you need to qualify

Applicants must select one of four investment routes. Each route imposes distinct capital requirements, presence obligations, and administrative fees.

Certificate of Permanent Residence requires CI$2 million invested in developed real estate. You must demonstrate financial resources sufficient to maintain your lifestyle and support all dependents without employment. Physical presence is minimal: 1 day per year. The issue fee is CI$100,000 for the main applicant. Each dependent pays CI$1,000 annually.

Residence Certificate (Little Cayman or Brac) requires CI$500,000 total investment. At least CI$250,000 must be deployed in developed real estate located in Brac or Little Cayman specifically. You must also prove either CI$75,000 annual income or maintain a CI$400,000 deposit in Cayman Islands assets. Physical presence is 30 days per year. The issue fee is CI$20,500 for the main applicant. Each dependent pays CI$1,000 annually. The permit is issued for 25 years.

Residence Certificate (standard) requires CI$1 million total investment. At least CI$500,000 must be deployed in developed real estate. You must also prove either CI$120,000 annual income or maintain a CI$400,000 deposit in Cayman Islands assets. Physical presence is 30 days per year. The issue fee is CI$20,500 for the main applicant. Each dependent pays CI$1,000 annually. The permit is issued for 25 years.

Certificate of Direct Investment requires CI$1 million invested in a licensed employment-generating business. You must hold substantial management control over the business. The business must employ at least four full-time employees, with 30% of the workforce being Caymanians. Physical presence is 90 days per year. The issue fee is CI$20,500 for the main applicant. Each dependent pays CI$1,000 annually. The permit is issued for 25 years.

All routes permit dependents. Annual dependent fees apply across all pathways. Investment capital must be verifiable and meet the prescribed thresholds before application submission.

Why this program may be worth considering

The program provides access to a zero-income-tax jurisdiction with no taxes on income, capital gains, inheritance, or corporate profits. Residency holders operate in a tax-neutral environment that preserves wealth accumulation across all asset classes.

Dual and multiple citizenship are permitted throughout the residency and naturalization process. You retain all existing nationalities without forced renunciation at any stage. This structural flexibility supports multi-jurisdictional flag strategies without legal friction.

The program grants access to a stable Common Law legal system with predictable regulatory frameworks and strong property rights protections. The jurisdiction maintains institutional stability backed by British Overseas Territory status, providing systemic resilience uncommon in Caribbean jurisdictions.

English is the official language across all government services, legal proceedings, banking operations, and daily transactions. No language barriers exist in residency administration, business formation, or civil interactions. This eliminates integration friction for Anglophone applicants.

Geographic positioning delivers direct proximity to major North American markets, just over one hour's flight to Miami. This enables seamless business access to the United States, Canada, and Latin American hubs without the relocation penalties typical of remote offshore jurisdictions.

The archipelago offers a warm tropical climate year-round, with average temperatures between 24°C and 30°C. Weather patterns support outdoor lifestyles and eliminate seasonal climate volatility.

World-class healthcare and education infrastructure operates at developed-nation standards. Medical facilities, international schools, and professional services function at levels typically unavailable in comparable Caribbean residency programs.

The program provides a pathway to British Overseas Territory Citizenship (BOTC) and eventual Right to Be Caymanian status. BOTC holders access 185 countries visa-free or visa-on-arrival, delivering travel mobility comparable to Tier-1 passports while maintaining Caribbean tax advantages.

Safety and security operate at exceptionally high levels. The jurisdiction maintains one of the Caribbean's lowest crime rates, with professional law enforcement, modern infrastructure, and institutional governance that reduce personal and business risk exposure.

How the path to citizenship works

The Certificate of Permanent Residence route is the only pathway that offers progression to British Overseas Territory Citizenship (BOTC) and the Right to Be Caymanian. The 25-year permit routes do not lead to citizenship.

BOTC requires 5 years of residence. You may not be absent for more than 450 days during the entire 5-year period. You may not be absent for more than 90 days in the 12 months immediately before applying for BOTC.

BOTC can be upgraded to full British Citizenship by fulfilling certain conditions. The specific conditions are not detailed in the program documentation.

Right to Be Caymanian requires at least 15 years of total residence. This timeline applies to applicants with no family ties to the islands. After obtaining BOTC, you must accumulate approximately 10 additional years of physical presence in the Cayman Islands before becoming eligible to apply for Right to Be Caymanian status.

The program permits dual and multiple citizenship. Whether you can retain your existing citizenship depends on your home country. Consult us as your specialist before proceeding.

Who oversees the program and what it is based on

Immigration Cayman Islands receives and processes all applications under this program.

The program operates under THE IMMIGRATION (TRANSITION) LAW 33 OF 2018, PART 6, which establishes the legal framework for investor residence and permanent residency pathways in the Cayman Islands.

What minimum capital commitment is required

The Cayman Islands Investor Visa requires a minimum capital commitment of CI$500,000, with four distinct investment routes offering different structures and thresholds.

  • Certificate of Permanent Residence: CI$2 million investment in developed real estate. Issue fee: CI$100,000 (main applicant); CI$1,000 annually per dependent.
  • Residence Certificate (Little Cayman or Brac): CI$500,000 investment minimum, with at least CI$250,000 in developed real estate in Brac or Little Cayman. Alternatively, CI$75,000 annual income or CI$400,000 deposit in Cayman Islands assets satisfies the financial requirement. Issue fee: CI$20,500 (main applicant); CI$1,000 annually per dependent.
  • Residence Certificate: CI$1 million investment minimum, with at least CI$500,000 in developed real estate. Alternatively, CI$120,000 annual income or CI$400,000 deposit in Cayman Islands assets satisfies the financial requirement. Issue fee: CI$20,500 (main applicant); CI$1,000 annually per dependent.
  • Certificate of Direct Investment: CI$1 million investment in a licensed, employment-generating business with substantial management control. Issue fee: CI$20,500 (main applicant); CI$1,000 annually per dependent.

All capital commitments are deployed directly into the specified investment vehicles (real estate, business operations, or Cayman Islands asset deposits). Issue fees are paid to the government upon application approval. Dependent fees are annual recurring costs, not one-time payments.

Which fees you should expect

The Certificate of Permanent Residence carries an issue fee of CI$100,000 for the main applicant. Each dependent costs CI$1,000 annually.

All other routes, Residence Certificate (Little Cayman or Brac), Residence Certificate (Grand Cayman), and Certificate of Direct Investment, share identical fee structures. The issue fee is CI$20,500 for the main applicant, with CI$1,000 per year per dependent.

Annual dependent fees apply for the duration of the permit. Residence Certificates are issued for 25 years; the Certificate of Permanent Residence does not specify a renewal period in the structure provided.

Find out which combination of residency, citizenship & structure actually fits your life

Most people live where they were born. Not where it makes strategic sense. They choose a country. Sovereign individuals build a setup.

A strong international setup considers:

  • tax systems
  • mobility
  • optionality
  • long-term security
  • a Plan B citizenship

Not just a visa.

In the strategy call, we evaluate which residency programs make strategic sense - and which ones could limit you long-term, create unnecessary obligations, or lead to avoidable tax exposure.

Build an international setup that gives you options - not dependencies.
