What makes this program stand out

Ecuador operates several income-based residence permit categories designed for individuals who derive income from foreign sources and wish to reside in the country long-term. All three visa types share the same core qualification threshold: applicants must demonstrate monthly foreign-source income equal to at least three times the Ecuadorian minimum wage of US$482, which translates to a required monthly income of US$1,446 as of 2026. Digital Nomad applicants face an additional requirement: bank statements must confirm possession of at least 72 minimum wages, equivalent to US$34,704 in liquid assets at the time of application. These visas are structured as independent means programs, income must originate outside Ecuador and does not require employment within the country.

The residence pathway begins with a temporary residence permit. After maintaining temporary residency for two years, applicants become eligible to apply for permanent residency. From the date of obtaining residency, applicants can pursue Ecuadorian citizenship after four years of continuous presence. Ecuador's Wohnsitzflagge comes with strict physical presence obligations that apply at all stages. Temporary residents must spend a minimum of 275 days per year physically in Ecuador and must not be absent for more than 90 consecutive days annually. The same 275-day annual presence requirement applies to permanent residency holders during their first three years of permanent status. These presence thresholds are non-negotiable and enforced throughout the residence and naturalization process.

Qualifying for this program requires no capital investment, no business creation, and no property purchase. The only material conditions are demonstrable foreign-source income at the specified threshold and willingness to maintain near-continuous physical presence in Ecuador. The Ecuadorian passport currently offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 92 countries worldwide. The program is administratively straightforward and emphasizes genuine residence rather than paper domicile, Ecuador does not tolerate minimal-presence residency arrangements. Applicants should structure their professional and personal lives around extended in-country presence before committing to the application process.

What you need to qualify

Ecuador structures income qualification through three distinct categories, each requiring proof of monthly foreign-source income at the same threshold: US$1,446 per month (3x the minimum wage). The difference lies in the source and classification of that income.

Rentista applicants must prove passive foreign income from investments, rental properties, annuities, or similar non-employment sources. Income must be verifiable and recurring. This route is designed for individuals deriving earnings from capital rather than active employment.

Jubilado applicants must demonstrate receipt of a certified monthly pension payment of at least US$1,446. The pension must be issued by a recognized financial or government institution and classified explicitly as a retirement or pension disbursement. Active employment income does not qualify under this category.

Digital Nomad applicants must satisfy three simultaneous conditions:

  • Foreign-source income of at least US$1,446 per month
  • Bank statements confirming possession of at least US$34,704 in liquid assets (72 minimum wages)
  • Proof of remote work or service provision for an employer, client, or company domiciled outside Ecuador

The Digital Nomad category explicitly targets location-independent workers. The additional capital requirement differentiates it from the Rentista and Jubilado pathways.

All applicants must provide health insurance valid in Ecuador for the duration of the initial visa period. This requirement applies regardless of visa category.

Dependents may be included in any visa application by demonstrating an additional US$250 monthly income per dependent. This threshold is fixed per person and applies to spouses, children, or other qualifying family members.

The initial residence permit is issued for 2 years. Renewal is indefinite as long as the income threshold continues to be met and physical presence obligations are satisfied. There is no limit on the number of renewals before transitioning to permanent residency.

Why this program may be worth considering

No capital deployment required. This program does not demand property purchase, business creation, or government contributions. You qualify through income alone.

Permanent residency after two years. Once you maintain temporary residence for 24 months, you become eligible to transition to permanent status without restarting your timeline.

Citizenship available in four years. From the date of obtaining residency, you can pursue naturalization after 48 months of continuous presence. Ecuador permits dual citizenship without requiring renunciation of your original nationality.

Lower cost of living. Ecuador offers substantially reduced living expenses compared to most developed nations, which supports income-based qualification at the US$1,446 monthly threshold.

Warm climate. The country provides year-round moderate to warm temperatures, particularly in coastal and Andean highland zones.

Short processing timelines. Administrative handling is faster than many comparable residence programs, reducing waiting periods between application submission and permit issuance.

Visa-free access to 92 destinations. The Ecuadorian passport grants visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to 92 countries globally once citizenship is acquired.

How the path to citizenship works

Citizenship becomes available after 4 years of residency in Ecuador. The timeline begins from the date you obtain your initial residence permit. You must satisfy two formal requirements: demonstrate mastery of Spanish language and demonstrate knowledge of Ecuadorian civics.

The 4-year period requires continuous physical presence throughout. During temporary residency (the first 2 years), you must remain in Ecuador for at least 275 days per year and not be absent for more than 90 consecutive days annually. After transitioning to permanent residency, the same 275-day annual presence obligation continues for the first 3 years of permanent status. These thresholds apply directly to your citizenship eligibility.

Ecuador permits dual citizenship. Whether you can retain your existing citizenship depends on your home country. Consult us as your specialist before proceeding.

Who oversees the program and what it is based on

The Ecuador Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility administers all applications for independent means visas.

The program operates under DECRETO No. 354, which establishes the regulations implementing the Organic Law on Human Mobility (Ley Orgánica de Movilidad Humana).

What level of income you need to show

Ecuador's three independent means visa categories each require foreign-source income of at least US$1,446 monthly, equivalent to three times the Ecuadorian minimum wage. The income type and documentation requirements differ by category.

Rentista visas accept passive income only. Qualifying sources include investment returns, rental income, annuities, and similar passive streams. Active employment income does not qualify under this category.

Jubilado visas require a monthly pension of at least US$1,446. The pension must be certified as official disbursement by a recognized pension institution, typically a government social security system or registered private pension provider.

Digital Nomad visas accept active foreign-source income of at least US$1,446 monthly. You must prove employment with or service provision to an employer, client, or company domiciled outside Ecuador. Additionally, your bank statements must demonstrate liquid reserves of at least US$34,704, equivalent to 72 times the minimum wage.

For all three categories, income must be foreign-sourced. Documentation requirements include bank statements showing consistent monthly deposits over a documented period. The specific statement duration and format are determined during application review.

If you include dependents, you must demonstrate an additional US$250 monthly income per dependent. This requirement applies across all three visa types.

Find out which combination of residency, citizenship & structure actually fits your life

Most people live where they were born. Not where it makes strategic sense. They choose a country. Sovereign individuals build a setup.

A strong international setup considers:

  • tax systems
  • mobility
  • optionality
  • long-term security
  • a Plan B citizenship

Not just a visa.

In the strategy call, we evaluate which residency programs make strategic sense - and which ones could limit you long-term, create unnecessary obligations, or lead to avoidable tax exposure.

Build an international setup that gives you options - not dependencies.
