Malta Digital Nomad Visa

The Malta digital nomad visa lets freelancers, contractors and remote employees live on the island for 1 year at a time, up to 4 years in total. The Malta Digital Nomad Visa is a residency program designed for digital freelancers, independent contractors, and remote workers who wish to establish legal residence in Malta. The permit is valid for 1 year and can be renewed three times, up to 4 years in total. It is structured specifically for location-independent professionals who perform their work remotely, either as self-employed individuals or under contract with employers or clients based outside Malta.

Qualification is based on occupational status and income capacity. Applicants must demonstrate that they work remotely in one of the eligible categories. The program requires proof of an annual income of at least EUR 42,000. This income threshold serves as the primary financial eligibility criterion, ensuring that applicants can support themselves during their stay without requiring access to local employment or state support systems.

The visa functions as a temporary residency permit. It does not require applicants to establish a business in Malta or seek local employment. The program offers a straightforward pathway for professionals who operate independently or work for foreign employers, enabling them to base themselves legally in Malta while continuing their remote work arrangements.

EUR 42,000 per year is the baseline income requirement. This converts to approximately EUR 3,500 monthly.

Income must originate from one of two qualifying sources:

• Remote employment: You work for a foreign employer under a valid employment contract lasting at least 3 months.
• Self-employment / freelancing: You operate as an independent contractor or digital freelancer, earning income from project-based or ongoing client work.

You must document your income through all three of the following:

• Bank statements: Covering the most recent 3 months, showing deposits matching your declared income.
• Income statements or tax returns: Official documentation proving the amount and legitimacy of earnings.
• Employment or project contracts: Remote workers must provide an active employment contract valid for at least 3 months. Freelancers must provide evidence of active project contracts.

If you are a remote employee, you must additionally provide 3 months of recent pay slips confirming salary deposits.

Income must be earned outside Malta. There is no requirement to maintain this income level continuously after visa issuance, but documentation at application must clearly demonstrate that you meet the threshold at the time of submission.

The application fee is EUR 300 per person and is non-refundable.

A further EUR 100 is charged when the residence card is issued.

The program has three routes: you work remotely for an employer outside Malta, you are a partner or shareholder in a company outside Malta, or you are a freelancer with clients outside Malta. All routes require the same income threshold of EUR 42,000 per year. Your income must be guaranteed for at least 5 months from the date of application.

For each applicant you submit a copy of all passport pages, including blank pages, as one single PDF. You also need Form N4, a signed letter of intent, your CV and bank statements for the last 3 months.

Applicants aged 18 and over need a police conduct certificate (original, no older than 6 months). You prove your work, depending on the route, with an employment contract that allows remote work, a certificate of incorporation with share register, or service contracts.

Health insurance covering Malta for 1 full year is mandatory. A travel insurance policy is not sufficient.

The application fee is EUR 300 per person and is non-refundable; a further EUR 100 is charged when the residence card is issued.
