What makes this program stand out

The Malta Digital Nomad Visa is a residency program designed for digital freelancers, independent contractors, and remote workers who wish to establish legal residence in Malta. The program grants permission to reside in the country for up to 1 year. It is structured specifically for location-independent professionals who perform their work remotely, either as self-employed individuals or under contract with employers or clients based outside Malta.

Qualification is based on occupational status and income capacity. Applicants must demonstrate that they work remotely in one of the eligible categories. The program requires proof of an annual income of at least EUR 42,000. This income threshold serves as the primary financial eligibility criterion, ensuring that applicants can support themselves during their stay without requiring access to local employment or state support systems.

The visa functions as a temporary residency permit. It does not require applicants to establish a business in Malta or seek local employment. The program offers a straightforward pathway for professionals who operate independently or work for foreign employers, enabling them to base themselves legally in Malta while continuing their remote work arrangements.

What you need to qualify

Qualification depends on your remote work status. There are two recognized routes: digital freelancers or independent contractors, and remote workers employed by foreign companies. Both routes require proof of minimum annual income of EUR 42,000. Applicants must hold a valid passport with at least 6 empty pages and 14 months of remaining validity at the time of application.

Digital freelancers and independent contractors must submit a recent CV, 3 months of bank statements, and 3 months of income statements or tax returns. You must provide a valid project contract demonstrating ongoing work arrangements. A prescribed personal bond form, letter of good conduct, and your highest education certificate are required. Valid Malaysian medical insurance must be obtained and submitted with the application.

Remote workers employed by foreign companies must submit a recent CV, 3 months of bank statements, and 3 months of income statements or tax returns. You must provide 3 months of pay slips and a valid employment contract covering at least 3 months or longer. A prescribed personal bond form, letter of good conduct, and your highest education certificate are required. Valid Malaysian medical insurance must be obtained and submitted with the application.

Application fees are MYR 1,000 for the main applicant. Each dependent costs an additional MYR 500. All documentation proving income, employment status, and insurance coverage must be current and verifiable at the time of submission.

What level of income you need to show

EUR 42,000 per year is the baseline income requirement. This converts to approximately EUR 3,500 monthly.

Income must originate from one of two qualifying sources:

  • Remote employment: You work for a foreign employer under a valid employment contract lasting at least 3 months.
  • Self-employment / freelancing: You operate as an independent contractor or digital freelancer, earning income from project-based or ongoing client work.

You must document your income through all three of the following:

  • Bank statements: Covering the most recent 3 months, showing deposits matching your declared income.
  • Income statements or tax returns: Official documentation proving the amount and legitimacy of earnings.
  • Employment or project contracts: Remote workers must provide an active employment contract valid for at least 3 months. Freelancers must provide evidence of active project contracts.

If you are a remote employee, you must additionally provide 3 months of recent pay slips confirming salary deposits.

Income must be earned outside Malta. There is no requirement to maintain this income level continuously after visa issuance, but documentation at application must clearly demonstrate that you meet the threshold at the time of submission.

Which documents are typically required

Digital Freelancers and Independent Contractors must submit: valid passport (minimum 6 empty pages, 14 months validity); recent CV; 3 months of bank statements; 3 months of income statements or tax returns; valid project contract; prescribed personal bond form; letter of good conduct; highest education certificate; valid Malaysian medical insurance.

Remote Workers must submit: valid passport (minimum 6 empty pages, 14 months validity); recent CV; 3 months of bank statements; 3 months of income statements or tax returns; 3 months of pay slips; valid employment contract (3 months or longer); prescribed personal bond form; letter of good conduct; highest education certificate; valid Malaysian medical insurance.

Which fees you should expect

The Malta Digital Nomad Visa requires a one-time application fee of MYR 1,000 for the primary applicant.

Each dependent included in the application incurs an additional fee of MYR 500 per person.

Applicants must also obtain valid Malaysian medical insurance as a program requirement; insurance costs are separate from application fees and vary by provider and coverage level.

Find out which combination of residency, citizenship & structure actually fits your life

Most people live where they were born. Not where it makes strategic sense. They choose a country. Sovereign individuals build a setup.

A strong international setup considers:

  • tax systems
  • mobility
  • optionality
  • long-term security
  • a Plan B citizenship

Not just a visa.

In the strategy call, we evaluate which residency programs make strategic sense - and which ones could limit you long-term, create unnecessary obligations, or lead to avoidable tax exposure.

Build an international setup that gives you options - not dependencies.
