What makes this program stand out

The Sweden Self-Employed Residence Program enables non-EU/EEA nationals to establish legal residence in Sweden through active business ownership and operation. This pathway is designed for entrepreneurs who intend to run their own business within Swedish territory. Applicants must demonstrate credible business experience, sufficient financial resources, and a viable business plan to qualify for the residence permit.

The program operates on an Active Investor Visa structure. Qualification depends on the applicant's ability to establish and actively manage a business in Sweden. Physical presence is mandatory, applicants must run the business from within Sweden, not remotely. The Swedish Migration Agency evaluates whether the proposed business is credible, whether the applicant has the necessary experience to execute it, and whether the financial means are adequate to sustain both the business and the applicant's living expenses.

Financial requirements are explicit and scaled by household size. The applicant must show access to SEK 200,000. If a spouse or partner accompanies the applicant, an additional SEK 100,000 is required. Each accompanying child requires an additional SEK 50,000. These amounts must be verifiable and available to support the applicant and dependents during the initial period of residence.

Successful applicants gain the right to reside and work in Sweden while operating their business. Family members may accompany the main applicant under the same permit structure. The residence permit establishes a pathway to permanent residency after five years of legal residence. Once permanent residency is granted, applicants may apply for Swedish citizenship after an additional period of five years of continuous residence with the permanent residence permit. Swedish citizenship provides visa-free access to 188 countries.

What you need to qualify

Applicants must own at least 50% of the business and be directly responsible for its operations and decision-making. The business must be actively managed from Sweden, remote management from abroad does not satisfy the requirement.

Business experience is mandatory. Applicants must demonstrate substantial prior experience in the industry they plan to operate in and proven experience running their own business. The Swedish Migration Agency evaluates whether the applicant's background is sufficient to execute the proposed business plan.

Language proficiency is assessed based on operational needs. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in either Swedish or English. Where the business involves extensive interaction with Swedish suppliers or customers, strong proficiency in Swedish is required.

A credible and well-documented business plan must be submitted. The plan must include a detailed budget, identification of the customer base, and evidence of established networks in Sweden. The Migration Agency reviews the plan to determine whether it is financially viable and operationally realistic.

Financial stability is assessed across two dimensions. First, personal financial stability: the applicant must prove access to SEK 200,000. If a spouse or partner accompanies the applicant, an additional SEK 100,000 must be available. Each accompanying child requires an additional SEK 50,000. These amounts must be verifiable and accessible to support living expenses during the initial residence period.

Second, operational financial capacity: the applicant must show sufficient financial resources to cover the costs of purchasing or running the business. Loans are generally not accepted as proof of operational capacity. The Migration Agency requires evidence that the business can be established and sustained without dependence on external financing.

Why this program may be worth considering

Sweden offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 188 countries once Swedish citizenship is acquired. Prior to citizenship, residence permit holders gain freedom of movement within the Schengen Area for travel purposes, though settlement rights in other Schengen states are not included.

The Swedish operating environment provides enhanced business access to large European economies. Entrepreneurs benefit from proximity to EU markets and established trade infrastructure. English is widely spoken throughout Sweden, reducing language barriers in business operations and daily life.

Sweden's physical environment is characterized by a temperate climate. The country ranks highly for safety and security, offering stable institutional conditions for long-term residence and business development.

How the path to citizenship works

The Sweden Self-Employed Residence Program establishes a structured pathway to Swedish citizenship through residency accumulation. Applicants must first obtain permanent residency after five years of legal residence. Once permanent residency is granted, applicants become eligible to apply for Swedish citizenship after an additional five years of continuous residence with the permanent residence permit.

Citizenship eligibility requires continuous residency in Sweden without prolonged absences. Applicants must demonstrate financial self-sufficiency throughout the entire residency period. A clean criminal record is mandatory, and all applicants must pass security checks.

Integration requirements include demonstrating knowledge of Swedish culture, language, and laws. Applicants must prove active engagement in Swedish society, including operating a business or working within Sweden during the qualifying period.

Who oversees the program and what it is based on

The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) is the authority responsible for processing applications under this program.

The program is based on Chapter 5, Section 5 of the Swedish Aliens Act (Utlänningslagen 2005:716), which establishes the legal framework for self-employed residence permits for non-EU/EEA nationals in Sweden.

What level of income you need to show

The income requirement for Sweden's Self-Employed Residence visa centers on demonstrating sufficient ongoing financial capacity to support yourself and any dependents through self-employment income.

You must prove liquid funds of SEK 200,000 for yourself as the primary applicant. Add SEK 100,000 for a spouse or partner and SEK 50,000 for each accompanying child. These funds establish your baseline financial stability; they are not monthly minimums but rather proof of solvency required upfront.

The Swedish Migration Agency focuses on your ability to generate sustainable income through your self-employment business. Your business plan must demonstrate credible revenue projections and a realistic customer base that will generate ongoing income sufficient to support your household. Income must come from your own business operations, you cannot rely on employment income, pensions, or external financial support.

Loans do not qualify as proof of financial resources. All funds demonstrating your solvency must be your own capital, not borrowed money. This applies both to your initial solvency funds and to any capital you deploy toward starting or purchasing your business.

Documentation of income capacity typically includes your business plan, bank statements showing your liquid funds, tax records from prior self-employment (if applicable), and evidence of established business networks or customer commitments. The Migration Agency will scrutinize whether your projected income is realistic and whether you genuinely have the operational capacity to generate it.

How to prove your financial means

You must demonstrate financial capacity through original documentation that the Swedish Migration Agency will verify directly with financial institutions. Bank statements alone are insufficient; you need comprehensive proof across multiple document categories.

Bank statements form your primary evidence. Provide statements covering the most recent three months from all accounts where you hold funds. Statements must show your name, account number, and current balance clearly. The Migration Agency will contact your bank to confirm account authenticity and balance verification.

If funds are held in investment accounts, savings accounts, or other financial products outside traditional checking accounts, you must include account statements from the issuing financial institution dated within the last month. These statements must clearly show your ownership, the asset type, and current value.

Capital contributions to the business require separate documentation. If you have already invested funds into the business or intend to do so, provide:

  • Invoices or receipts for business purchases or equipment
  • Business registration documentation showing your ownership stake and capital injected
  • If purchasing an existing business, the purchase agreement and proof of payment
  • If establishing a new business, documentation of preliminary investment or secured capital allocation

The Migration Agency distinguishes between owned capital and borrowed capital. Loans, credit lines, mortgages, and other borrowed funds are generally not accepted as proof of financial capacity. You must demonstrate that funds are genuinely yours, not borrowed against future income or contingent on external approval.

If you hold assets outside Sweden, real estate, vehicles, business equity, or other valuables, you may include certified valuations or ownership documentation demonstrating these assets exist and are yours. Include property deeds, vehicle registrations, business share certificates, or professional appraisals (dated within the last six months). These documents must be accompanied by an official translation into English or Swedish if the original is in another language.

Documentation must be official and verifiable. Acceptable sources include banks, government registries, licensed accountants, and certified financial institutions. Informal statements, personal letters, or unverified screenshots are not accepted.

All documents must be in English or Swedish. If original documents are in another language, obtain an official certified translation from a qualified translator. The translation must include the translator's credentials and certification stamp.

Bank statements and account documentation should be dated within one month of your application submission. The Migration Agency may request updated statements if processing extends beyond 30 days from the date documents were issued.

Find out which combination of residency, citizenship & structure actually fits your life

Most people live where they were born. Not where it makes strategic sense. They choose a country. Sovereign individuals build a setup.

A strong international setup considers:

  • tax systems
  • mobility
  • optionality
  • long-term security
  • a Plan B citizenship

Not just a visa.

In the strategy call, we evaluate which residency programs make strategic sense - and which ones could limit you long-term, create unnecessary obligations, or lead to avoidable tax exposure.

Build an international setup that gives you options - not dependencies.
