01 · DEFINITIONWhat Withholding Tax means
Withholding tax is deducted at the source. Before a dividend, an interest payment or a royalty reaches your account, the paying company or bank keeps a share and hands it to its tax authority.
Typical rates are 15 to 35 %. The United States withhold 30 % on dividends to non-residents by default, Switzerland 35 %, Germany 26,375 %.
For an international investor this is the tax that does not care where you live. It hits at the source. What you get back, or never lose, depends on 3 things: a Double Taxation Agreement between the source country and your residency country, a Tax Residency Certificate to prove that residency, and the right forms filed on time.
With the right setup, US dividends drop from 30 % to 15 % or lower. Without it, you pay the full rate and may never see the money again.
Under Flag Theory 3.0 this is one reason the residency flag and the asset flag are planned together. A residency in a country without treaties can be perfect for income taxes and expensive for a dividend portfolio.
Which withholding rates apply to your portfolio after a move is a calculation we run before you relocate, not after.
